Don’t spend gold and heirlooms on new recruits, spend your resources only on leveled-up characters. It’s better to Hire an Antiquarian as soon as you come across one in the stagecoach when you’re in need of some gold. Cut a hero loose if he has a number of undesirable quirks and is always stressed out due to afflictions. 
Keep track of how stressed out your characters are, to avoid any sort of harmful effects. To avoid a predicament always have Backup heroes in case the heroes of the primary group die. Have a Healer in your team to keep your characters healthy so they can continue to combat. Upgrade the Stagecoach to have access to more heroes following each quest. A tactical retreat is essential, better get your heroes stressed than killed. 
Avoid basing all of your expectations on a single hero or party setup and expect failures and setbacks.Darkest Dungeon is a tough game but following some strategies makes it a bit easier.
